What is the ‘Quality Through Outcomes’ Initiative?

The Division of Mental Health recognises that good quality information is essential to a continuous quality improvement process and is committed to ensuring that Mental Health Services achieve this goal.

The development of a robust information infrastructure is vital to provide data relating to the effectiveness of Mental Health Services and is paramount in determining whether the organisation’s mission and broader organisational goals have been achieved.

The core components of the Western Australia’s Quality Through Outcomes initiative are as follows:

The Clinical Training Program

The Clinical Training Program is focused on assisting clinicians to integrate the collection, recording and reporting of consumer outcome measures and casemix data in Western Australia through:

  • Establishing and sustaining a network for ongoing training and education in mental health consumer outcome measurement;
  • Developing quality assurance strategies that involve outcome measurement; and
  • Continuing consumer and carer participation in collecting consumer outcome measures.

The Clinical Training Program oversees the following projects:

Integrating the National Outcome & Casemix Collection Data into Everyday Clinical Practice

This project has the objective of integrating the collection, recording, reporting and utilisation of the NOCC data into everyday clinical practice. It will examine the processes health services have put in place to support the collection of outcome measurement data and the rigour and effectiveness of such processes.

National Outcomes & Casemix Collection Quality Improvement Project

The Division of Mental Health in collaboration with local mental health services across the state will be undertaking the quality improvement project, which aims to improve the quality of the data that is collected.

Provision of Training in Analysing and Reporting the NOCC Data

Managers and a number of senior clinicians will be provided with training to enhance their skills and knowledge on how to interpret the NOCC data, produce reports and apply the data to address service planning issues and decision making.

Psychiatric Services Online Information System (PSOLIS):

A robust information infrastructure like PSOLIS is vital to provide the information relating to the effectiveness of Mental Health Services and will improve access to quality and timely information.
